Unions keep pressure on Specter to change position on ‘card check’
Despite his assurance that he is still a "no" vote on the harmful Employee Free Choice Act, U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party is re-energizing organized labor's efforts to advance this anti-worker, anti-democracy legislation.
In fact, the Service Employees International Union recently sent a memo to its Pennsylvania membership last week announcing unequivocally that it would not back down on pressuring Specter to change his position on card check.
SEIU reminded its membership that since Specter's announcement, big labor has generated more than 50,000 calls to Specter's offices; produced more than 50,000 total handwritten letters to Specter's offices; and held hundreds of protests, rallies and house meetings across the state.
Additionally, according to newspaper accounts, U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, the lead sponsor of EFCA, "sees new life in the labor-backed bill and is fighting to win Sen. Arlen Specter's support for a compromise plan."
Harkin said negotiations between Specter and a few other Democrats resistant to the union bill "were moving forward."
Concerned Pennsylvanians who respect all workers' right to the private ballot process, and who understand the dire economic consequences of the deceptively titled Employee Free Choice Act can't and won't back down either!
Too much is at stake.
Contact your federal officials in Washington and tell them to reject EFCA and any similar legislation that threatens jobs and worker freedoms!
